Lunch was weer uitstekend!

SPEECH BARTELD:
'We are in the year 2053, exactly one-hundred years after the horrendous North Sea Flood in the Dutch province of Zeeland. In 2053 Amsterdam floods. Tom, Milan, Camillo, Merve, Laurens and I, better known as the Dutch delegation, are drunk…eh drowned. Dikes breaching, torrents of water come crashing in, The Netherlands cease to exist. And so do I. In 2053 global temperatures have risen 2 degrees, sealevels increased dramatically due to melting icecaps and glaciers. Biodiversity is decreasing rapidly and the frequency and severity of natural disaster mushrooms. All this is caused by excessive emission of greenhouse gasses, such as CO2, and still expanding deforestation. To combat this, the 1997 Kyotoprotocol has been established. In 2012, however, Kyoto will expire and the world will lack a global climate policy, while it is so urgently needed to guarantee our children, our grandchildren the ability to experience the world as we know it. In Copenhagen this December, it is therefore necessary to reach global consensus on our climate policy: it is therefore necessary for the EU to speak in one voice; it is therefore necessary for the EU to take a leading stand in this debate. Act, don’t doubt, and spare the world this disastrous fate. To avoid this, the world will have to cut back emission by 90-95% in 2050 and stop the rainforests from diminishing any further. To reach these ambitious goals, severe measures have to be implemented, investments in renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind and waterpower should increase and further development of new ways to reduce CO2-levels like carbon capture and storage encouraged. Moreover, implementing a global cap- and tradesystem will further decrease the amount of emitted GHG’s: through this system the least developed countries will be able to further their economies by selling off their surplus of emission permits to most developed countries. Since we aspire to preserve today’s world for generations to come, it is imminent we drastically change our behaviour towards climate and submit ourselves to uncompromising measures in Copenhagen. Let’s put our determination to the test and save the world for your grandchildren. Most importantly, however, let’s save the world so Milan, Tom, Laurens, Merve , Camillo and I actually get the chance to produce children.'
